Bosco Isabella is a fascinating garden defined as “romantic and esoteric”. Built from the end of the 19th century to the Second World War by the Luchini family, a family passionate about English gardens. The realization wanted to be in harmony with nature without violating it in any way: paths were created, dry stone walls, flat bridges but all with stones collected on the spot.

The real singularity of the place is a stone pyramid with a triangular base in the center of the garden. The Luchini family adhered to a Masonic Lodge and thus recreated a sort of initiatory-esoteric path in the garden, an open-air Masonic temple. Thus some things that seem natural are studied, such as the arrangement of some trees in groups of three, a symbolic number, or the jar buried before the square that recalls the basin of the temple of Solomon used for ablutions, or the two large boulders arranged at the beginning of the path leading to the pyramid, representing the two columns of the Solomonic temple. Continuing, you will discover the circle-shaped Boxwood hedge that represents the eye that oversees and obviously the triangular-based pyramid, the main symbol of Freemasonry.

La Quercia delle Checche (Checche oak) is located in the Municipality of Pienza, in the province of Siena, in the heart of the Val d’Orcia. Its age is around 370 years old, and it is the first green monument in Italy. About 20 meters high, with a crown of over 34 meters in diameter which in summer boasts a thick and beautiful crown, a refuge for many birds.

History has seen it as a protagonist at various times, the last of which was during the Second World War when it was chosen as a shelter for the partisans’ ammunition. The tree is also known as the Oak of the Witches, because according to an ancient legend in the past it was the place where they met on the occasion of the Sabbath, a convention during which magical practices and blasphemous rites were performed.

Following a shameful act of vandalism in 2014, after a bureaucratic process that lasted 3 years, the Ministry of Cultural Heritage recognized the Quercia delle Checche as a property to be protected. It has been classified as a monumental tree because it is “of particular public interest”. In fact, in June 2017 it obtained the MiBACT recognition becoming the first Green Monument in Italy.

San Quirico d’Orcia is a delightful small Tuscan village that we absolutely recommend you visit. An ideal point to visit Pienza, Bagno Vignoni and Montalcino, San Quirico d ‘Orcia is a delightful village located in the heart of the Val d’Orcia.
An important stop along the Via Francigena, this village still shows its medieval structure, surrounded by the ancient city walls. From here you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Val d’Orcia and Mount Amiata.
Here you will be spoiled for choice of monuments to visit: you can start by visiting the splendid Horti Leonini, a perfect example of the classic Italian garden. Here in the center of the green labyrinth stands the beautiful statue of Cosimo III de ‘Medici; continuing along the characteristic streets of the town, you can reach the remains of the Torre del Cassero, an ancient tower almost 40 meters high which was destroyed during the Second World War. Strolling along the streets of the village you will find numerous shops selling typical products and crafts and excellent restaurants.

A well-preserved example of a classic 16th century Italian garden, the Horti have kept their original structure to this day. Perhaps the most precious treasure of the medieval village, these gardens are divided into a lower part, the actual garden and an upper one, characterized by a grassy square in the center of a small holm oak wood. The entrance to this enchanting place is located within the ancient walls of the town. In the center stands the statue of Cosimo III dei Medici, sculpted by Bartolomeo Mazzuoli (1688).

After passing the village going towards Torrenieri, right in the middle of the hill stands this small grouping of cypresses that seems painted. The advice is to park along the road where there is a small rest area on both sides of the carriageway.

Among the most loved and iconic places by photographers in the Val d’Orcia and Tuscany, it is a must on your tour of the Val d’Orcia. One thing that not everyone knows is that there are two cypress groves in San Quirico d’Orcia: the lower one (the most famous and photographed) and the one located higher up, at the top of the hill. The latter, unlike the other, can be reached either on foot from the main road or along a secondary dirt road. Once you get to the top, you can literally enter the famous circle of cypresses.

The Giardini della Foce are a magical place that has no equal in southern Tuscany.

A shining example of an Italian garden, where the basins, hedges, fountains, benches blend perfectly with the surrounding nature, the Giardino la Foce is located within the estate of the same name, founded in 1498.

Villa La Foce was born as a hostel to host pilgrims who went to Rome along the Via Francigena. Purchased the Villa from Iris Origo and her husband at the beginning of the twentieth century, after the wedding the woman decided to live in Villa la Foce and to make that area better for the poor and peasants, with reclamation works and founding a sanctuary for children with tuberculosis . The story of Iris unfolds between the 1920s and 1930s, together with that of her garden, designed with great skill by the architect Pinsent that she had seen at work at Villa Medici in Florence.

The first garden, the lemon garden, the rose garden and the lower garden lead to appreciate the great skills of the architect, who was able to exploit the morphology of the land and set this precious place in the splendid scenery of the Val d’Orcia. The view of Mount Amiata that can be enjoyed from the terrace of the Lemon Garden leaves you astonished by the wonder: the perfect integration between human and natural landscape makes you literally speechless.
