A community theater, an example of theater attended by the whole community that is more unique than rare! Reach the characteristic square of the village of Monticchiello and take part in this fantastic show under the stars. In fact, in Monticchiello there has never been a real theater with boxes and stalls. You will witness a real community performance that is different and unrepeatable every year.

The Poor Theater of Monticchiello is an extraordinary social project born in the 60s from the need to rebuild the social fabric of the village after the sharecropping crisis and the problem of depopulation. Unique of its kind precisely because its staging is “participated” by all the inhabitants of the village, who very often, in the square, recite themselves.
With the end of sharecropping, the population was drastically reduced, the countryside depopulated and the community had the distinct feeling that the entire cultural identity it had could vanish into thin air. The reaction of the community was therefore to tighten to defend their identity and thus the project for the poor theater of Monticchiello was born.

La Quercia delle Checche (Checche oak) is located in the Municipality of Pienza, in the province of Siena, in the heart of the Val d’Orcia. Its age is around 370 years old, and it is the first green monument in Italy. About 20 meters high, with a crown of over 34 meters in diameter which in summer boasts a thick and beautiful crown, a refuge for many birds.

History has seen it as a protagonist at various times, the last of which was during the Second World War when it was chosen as a shelter for the partisans’ ammunition. The tree is also known as the Oak of the Witches, because according to an ancient legend in the past it was the place where they met on the occasion of the Sabbath, a convention during which magical practices and blasphemous rites were performed.

Following a shameful act of vandalism in 2014, after a bureaucratic process that lasted 3 years, the Ministry of Cultural Heritage recognized the Quercia delle Checche as a property to be protected. It has been classified as a monumental tree because it is “of particular public interest”. In fact, in June 2017 it obtained the MiBACT recognition becoming the first Green Monument in Italy.

UNESCO World Heritage Site and protagonist of the most famous landscapes of Tuscany and Italy, the Chapel of the Madonna di Vitaleta is a small jewel framed between two rows of cypresses. One of the most important attractions to see in San Quirico d’Orcia, and absolutely one of the most iconic places in the Val d’Orcia and in all of Tuscany. The Vitaleta chapel is an authentic symbol of the Val d’Orcia and of the Tuscan imaginary: a white church with cypresses around it that rises on a hill surrounded by wheat, an authentic pearl of beauty.

Always a destination for photographers and incurable romantics, this small church is located on a dirt road that leads from San Quirico d’Orcia to Pienza in the direction of Montepulciano. Along the SP146 road, we always remember from San Quirico to Pienza towards Montepulciano) you will find on the right a small sign that will take you onto a dirt road. After about 2km you will have to park the car and finish the last 500m on foot.

Arrived in the woods, after parking, continue on foot among the trees and you will find in front of you a spectacle that you will never forget! Follow the sound of the water and you will find yourself in front of the Fosso Bianco, which collects the waters that flow from the various sources, creating pools and pools where you can immerse yourself and spend a few hours of true relaxation.

A real natural thermal oasis, where the waters gush out at a temperature of 48 °, cooling slowly down towards the valley. You can therefore find tubs with various temperatures and this makes it possible to take a nice relaxing bath in the natural baths of Bagni San Filippo at any time of the year.

Montalcino is a must for those who want to visit the Val d’Orcia! This is the homeland of the famous Brunello di Montalcino wine, one of the most famous and well-known wines in the world. You cannot fail to indulge in a nice tasting in one of the many wineries in the area! To the south of Monte Amiata, expanses and expanses of vineyards grow that surround the fairytale medieval village, surrounded by an ancient castle and a large and mighty wall.
A village with a great history, Montalcino derives from Mons Ilcinus, or the mount of holm oaks (in fact, the inhabitants of Montalcino are called ilcinesi). Walking through the vineyards that lead to the enchanting village, your attention will be immediately captured by the mighty fortress, a pentagonal castle site of important events such as the Jazz & Wine Festival. A festival animated by music, theater, dance and of course Brunello tastings that will take place in the Enoteca della Fortezza.

Visiting the jewel of the Val d’Orcia is one of those things to do at least once in a lifetime! Immerse yourself in the harmony of the “ideal city”, a real stone jewel wanted by Enea Silvio Piccolomini, the future Pope Pius II.

Many of the streets of the Renaissance Pienza bear romantic or evocative names: cross Pienza walking along the main street, Corso Rossellino, which is overlooked by artisan shops, restaurants and flowered balconies.

In the middle of Corso Rossellino opens “Piazza Pio II”, which overlooks the Town Hall. Continue to Piazza di Spagna with its beautiful well, and if you want to enjoy a unique show, take a detour along the very romantic Via del Casello. Here you can admire the whole Val d’Orcia from above: a breathtaking spectacle that you can enjoy tasting the renowned Pecorino di Pienza, perhaps accompanied by an excellent glass of wine.

San Quirico d’Orcia is a delightful small Tuscan village that we absolutely recommend you visit. An ideal point to visit Pienza, Bagno Vignoni and Montalcino, San Quirico d ‘Orcia is a delightful village located in the heart of the Val d’Orcia.
An important stop along the Via Francigena, this village still shows its medieval structure, surrounded by the ancient city walls. From here you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Val d’Orcia and Mount Amiata.
Here you will be spoiled for choice of monuments to visit: you can start by visiting the splendid Horti Leonini, a perfect example of the classic Italian garden. Here in the center of the green labyrinth stands the beautiful statue of Cosimo III de ‘Medici; continuing along the characteristic streets of the town, you can reach the remains of the Torre del Cassero, an ancient tower almost 40 meters high which was destroyed during the Second World War. Strolling along the streets of the village you will find numerous shops selling typical products and crafts and excellent restaurants.
