If looking at these images they seem familiar to me, know that this monastery in the heart of Pienza, in Val d’Orcia was used to shoot some of the most famous scenes of the film “The English Patient”, winner of 9 Academy Awards.

The monumental complex of Sant’Anna in Camprena is a former 15th century Olivetan Benedictine monastery, an imposing and sober place but also endowed with profound spirituality. Here are preserved a splendid cycle of frescoes by the painter Antonio Bazzi. Currently the monastery is used as a farmhouse managed by the diocese of Montepulciano-Chiusi-Pienza.

Visit the monastery to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of profound spirituality that pervades it, and take the opportunity to allow yourself a few hours of relaxation. Here in summer you will find concerts inside the church and the monastery every year hosts different art courses: painting, drawing, photography , music. The farm has also collaborated for years with the “Scuola Camprena” School of Italian Language and Culture which is less than 1 km from the Monastery.

Montalcino is a must for those who want to visit the Val d’Orcia! This is the homeland of the famous Brunello di Montalcino wine, one of the most famous and well-known wines in the world. You cannot fail to indulge in a nice tasting in one of the many wineries in the area! To the south of Monte Amiata, expanses and expanses of vineyards grow that surround the fairytale medieval village, surrounded by an ancient castle and a large and mighty wall.
A village with a great history, Montalcino derives from Mons Ilcinus, or the mount of holm oaks (in fact, the inhabitants of Montalcino are called ilcinesi). Walking through the vineyards that lead to the enchanting village, your attention will be immediately captured by the mighty fortress, a pentagonal castle site of important events such as the Jazz & Wine Festival. A festival animated by music, theater, dance and of course Brunello tastings that will take place in the Enoteca della Fortezza.

Do you remember the film The Gladiator with the famous scene in which Massimo Decimo Meridio walks in the middle of the Elysian Fields?
Well, the location used for the filming is located in Val d’Orcia: exactly 3 km south of Pienza along the Terrapille road. Follow the signs that lead to the Terrapille farmhouse and walk along the well-known avenue of cypresses surrounded by the wonderful panorama of the wheat fields where one of the most evocative scenes of the film was shot.

The House of Massimo Decimo Meridio is located at the gates of San Quirico d’Orcia. It is easy to recognize the avenue with cypresses leading to the house, from which the soldiers who kill the gladiator’s wife and son arrive. Even the scenes of the Elysian Fields that appear in a dream to Massimo Decimo Meridio are panoramic and evocative glimpses of the Val d’Orcia. We are certainly talking about one of the best known streets of the Val d’Orcia, this is a place full of charm.

The parish church of Saints Vito and Modesto in Corsignano (known more simply as the parish church of Corsignano) is a Catholic place of worship located in the locality of the same name near Pienza. Its origins are very ancient and date back to the 7th century, even if the current appearance, in Romanesque style, can be dated to the 12th century. The parish church of Corsignano was one of the most important stops on one of the routes of the Via Francigena. An unmissable stop on your Pienza tours, this church remains slightly away from the town but it is really worth reaching it. Here you will find a simple and bare church, but filled with a breathtaking view of the surrounding nature, a true paradise of peace and quiet.

Inside, relatively bare, there are three naves each with an altar. The bell tower is the most impressive and particular element of the structure: cylindrical in shape, of typically Ravenna origin. Inside you can read the plaque commemorating Father De Rugeis and see the grate of the tabernacle on the wall. Here a mystical aura reigns also thanks to the poor lighting, if you want to meditate and pray this is the ideal place. Among the baptismal fonts that still remain in the Sienese territory, that of Pienza is one of the most notable. In this church, both Pope Pius II and his nephew Pope Pius III were baptized at the baptismal font.
